"The Odyssey in Shadow"
The Department of Theatre and Dance will present The Odyssey in Shadow, a large-scale cinematic shadow theater experience inspired by the ancient epic The Odyssey. The production will perform at the end of spring quarter 2026 in the Arena Theatre, Wright Hall.
Co-directed by longtime artistic associates and veteran collaborators Caryl Kientz and Lydia Greer from the renowned ShadowLight Productions and the interdisciplinary collective Facing West Shadows, this work merges myth and memory through an immersive visual language of light, shadow, and movement.

Vocalist Constanza Pellicci (from Córdoba, Argentina by way of Zurich, Switzerland) joins in duo with local stalwart Lisa Mezzacappa. Constanza in her own words:
“In my artistic practice, I explore the voice through improvisation, movement, writing and teaching, forming an interdisciplinary field of research. I approach the voice as a phenomenon of emotional, relational, erotic and mysterious potential — a space where singular and non-normative expressions can emerge.
Improvisation and movement allow me to explore the body’s resonance within the space and with others, while writing and teaching help me reflect, transmit, and generate new questions.
At the core of my work is a desire to create fragile and vibrant spaces where the strange, the intimate, the sensual, and the unfamiliar can resonate — composing relationships through sound, where other ways of being, listening and relating can emerge.”
Joining the evening in support is the emerging local trio Era Mothra (saxophone), Désirée Sturrock (cello) and Isabelle Waldner Kalb (guitar).

Light, shadow, and storytelling collide in Facing West Shadows: Lysistrata, a performance remixing the ancient Greek tale through expanded cinema and live shadow play. Handmade animation, puppets, masks, and projection intermingle with music to create a shifting visual landscape. Rather than following a single narrative, this piece invites you to watch as images form, dissolve, and recombine—revealing light and shadow in unexpected ways.
Facing West Shadows is a collective of artists, puppeteers, filmmakers, animators, and musicians. Combining old and new technologies and artforms, the collective depicts stories re-imagined with unique visual storytelling and surprising experiences.
Lydia Greer, founder and artistic director of Facing West Shadows, is a visual artist who focuses on layered, mixed media work.
